Portugal will no longer host GP2 or GP3 this year

Organisers of the GP2 and GP3 series have announced that their Portugese round, due to take place at the Portimao circuit on The Algarve, has been cancelled.

The venue was initially scheduled to host this season’s fourth round in June, the only one not supporting a Formula One race. It is not due to be rescheduled.

Organisers say that the 2010 season will now consist of ten rounds, starting with the Barcelona event that is currently underway and ending at Abu Dhabi in November.

GP2 Series organiser Bruno Michel said: “We are disappointed to have to cancel Portimao this season, but the track organisers have not met their contractual obligations, and therefore we cannot go back to Portugal this year.

“It is a shame because I believe that GP2 produced some great race action on that track last September, and we would have loved to have Portimao on our calendar again this season.

“We will see whether we can return there in 2011. Meanwhile, we will not replace this round in 2010, and therefore will now have 20 races on our calendar.”
