Darren Manning feels his team wasn’t able to show its true pace in qualifying for the IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix and hopes to spring a few surprises during the race.
He said: “It’s always difficult to get the car dialled into good track conditions when you’re in the slow group which happened here and at Sonoma. But we made some changes overnight and when we were to do our qual sim, a red came out.
“We never showed what we had. I knew the car would be faster from this morning. I had confidence in it. We’ll do a few more bits on the ABC car overnight and hopefully we’ll be even more competitive in the race.”
He was impressed by the Belle Isle circuit: “It is an interesting track and I’m learning it as is everyone else. It’s hard work with how bumpy it is, but it’s like St. Pete so hopefully, we’ll be more competitive. In our second session, we kept getting faster even as the tires were getting older so I think all of the changes we were making were good changes.”
