Pay attention, you at the back! You’ve only got a couple of months to get ready for this one.
Organisers of the A1GP open-wheel racing series, dubbed “the World Cup of motorsport”, have announced a third season to begin on September 30. The first race is due to take place at Zandvoort in the Netherlands.
The series will then visit the Czech Republic, Malaysia, Zhuhai in China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Mexico before heading back to China for a second stint in Shanghai.
Races take place at approximately monthly intervals and just one – the third, set for an Asian venue – is still to be confirmed. The eleventh and final race of the season will take place at Brands Hatch in May 2008.
Pete da Silva, chief executive officer of A1 GP, said: “This year’s race calendar sees a few changes and the addition of one new venue which I feel reflects the evolution of this fantastic racing series. 2007/08 is going to be a bigger and better season with so much to look forward to.”
The British team, which has come third in both series held so far, has two confirmed drivers – including former F3 champion Robbie Kerr who was in the car for the 2005/06 season and who made several trips to the podium in the service of his country.
He’s confident that 2007/08 could be the breakthrough year for Team GBR: “With A1 Team Great Britain getting better and better, it can only be good for us to have the final round at Brands Hatch.
“Hopefully we will have already got the title wrapped up before we get to Brands Hatch, but if we don’t, then knowing how good we are at Brands Hatch could help us.
“We had such support tremendous from the crowd this season, and I’m sure we will have that again.”
Joining him is last year’s rookie driver, Oliver Jarvis, who had his first outing in an A1 GP car during 2006. He is a former winner of the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award.
