Adam Khan could be about to salvage something from a disastrous 2008/09 season for Team Pakistan by finally taking to the track when the series visits Portugal on April 12.
Khan, who is the team boss as well as the driver, has had a season plagued with frustrations after the much-hyped new Ferrari-inspired chassis proved unsuitable for his 6ft 1in frame.
Production problems meant that the series, which had taken chassis manufacture in-house, had serious problems supplying teams with sufficient cars in time for the season start.
This meant the adaptations that Khan needed went straight to the back of the queue.
The modified car was tested in South Africa in February, where Khan professed himself satisfied and prepared to race at Portimao when the series visits the Algarve.
He said after the test: “It’s been a long wait for me to have a car which I could safely and comfortably fit, but it’s been worth it. I really enjoyed the handling of this new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car, and I was gaining confidence throughout the test.
“It was a very smooth-running test and with the excellent reliability we had, we were able to quickly move on to developing our performance.
“Unfortunately we’re a long way behind the other teams now, as they have completed five race weekends and that’s given them plenty of time to understand the complexity of the car, its handling characteristics and setup development.
“We elected not to contest the South African round, but we’ll be racing again at the next round in Portugal.”
Khan has not exactly been wasting his time in the meantime, having been talent-spotted by the F1 Renault team, where he was given a demonstration drive.
But it will be a tremendous relief both to him and all Team Pakistan’s many fans to see the car finally hit the track.
