F1: Coulthard lukewarm on tintop driving

David Coulthard is not a great fan of driving stock cars or touring cars, as he revealed in a press conference that formed part of his visit to watch the Red Bull NASCAR team at the Dover International Speedway.

His team is shooting a promotional film about its NASCAR operation in the run-up to the Canadian Grand Prix and Coulthard was in the US to get an insight into how the tintop series works.

Coulthard’s visit inevitably raised questions about a possible series switch – squashed immediately by his team, which requested that people should refrain from “starting silly rumours.”

During the press conference he explained how he had driven touring cars before entering F1 but did not relish the experience: “The cars felt alien to me, even though I knew where the apex and the braking points were. It was so unnatural.

“A single-seater feels part of me I don’t think about over-steer, I just make the correction. A stock car must be so difficult to drive. I did get into one and couldn’t even see out of it.”

Coulthard said he would be prepared to drive a stock car – but only in private: “I wouldn’t want to do it with a lot of people around.”

Motorsport.com has got a nice piece on his visit, describing how he’s a long-time fan who enjoyed the chance to meet (or see again) the drivers involved in the series.
