James Stewart, the elder brother of veteran F1 star Sir Jackie Stewart, and a racing driver in his own right, has died aged 76.

Known as Jimmy, he was a veteran of Le Mans and a single Formula One championship race – the 1953 British Grand Prix.

Famous for his success in driving for Jaguar and Aston Martin during the 1950s, he inspired his brother to take up the sport.

Sir Jackie paid tribute to his brother by saying: “If it hadn’t been for following Jimmy around to the races with my autograph book as a teenager back in the 1950s when he was a leading sportscar driver for the likes of the Ecurie Ecosse team, Jaguar and Aston Martin, I don’t think I would have become so passionately involved in the sport.

“Many would have left their younger brother at home, but Jim looked after me. I owe him almost everything, because he selflessly showed me the way.”
