The owner of Donington Park has announced this morning that he is confident of getting the circuit back in action by the summer.
On the day that Silverstone celebrated the launch of its redeveloped British Grand Prix layout, built after it won the contract back from Donington in January, owner Kevin Wheatcroft issued his supporters with an update.
The announcement is starting to elicit responses from fans of Donington delighted to have some positive news to celebrate. There is, however, no mention at this stage of a potential new leaseholder to bring long-term stability.
Wheatcroft said in a press release published via the Save Donington supporters’ group: “The plans to re-open the new improved Donington Park racetrack are progressing well.
“The project advisors, led by ex-Aggregate Industries director Philip Barltrop and Duncan Green of Pick Everard Consulting Engineers, have met John Symes of the MSA and we are currently finalising plans and costings for the works to repair the damage done in and around the racetrack at Donington Park.
“We are confident that the new improved racetrack can be re-opened, subject to obtaining the necessary racing licences, during August 2010.”
He added that Robert Fearnall, the circuit’s race drector, is working on “an appropriate race programme for 2010” to be announced as soon as possible with the intention of making it available for national and international motorsport.
Certainly an August date would allow the Donington BTCC round, due to be held on September 18-19, to go ahead as planned.
